Your favorite artist’s favorite artist, Chappell Roan, graced The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon last night. To celebrate the occasion, she brought her A-game in extreme beauty.
“You're known for your on-stage looks,” Fallon remarked during their interview, showcasing a collage of Roan's appearances, including her fully glammed Statue of Liberty look at Governor's Ball.
“My stylist Genesis Webb and I draw inspiration from drag, horror movies, burlesque, and theater—I love looking pretty and scary,” Roan explained. For the Tonight Show, bird was the word. Roan revealed that 2003's Barbie of Swan Lake served as the moodboard for the evening. To bring this vision to life, hairstylist Dom Forletta transformed her signature red curls into a bleach blonde mane (a wig or her own hair, only time will tell), while makeup artist Andrew Dahling blocked her eyebrows and strategically placed feathers to frame her eyes. She wore two different feathered outfits to embody both White Swan queen Odette and Black Swan Odile.
“The blonde really enhanced the ethereal, swan look we were aiming for,” Forletta shared exclusively. “Yes, it's a wig! A wig and a lot of extensions to match the fullness of Chappell’s real hair.” To achieve her signature curls, he used “a combination of the ghd Thin Curling Wand and classic figure 8 waves using hairpins.” The final touch for higher-than-high hair was R&Co's Balloon Dry Volume Spray.
Throughout the interview, Roan casually chews gum and taps her nails adorned by Juan Alvear—what can only be described as 6-inch talons. “When you examine them closely, each nail mimics the quill of a plucked feather,” Alvear explained. “I achieved this effect using Artic Jelly and Buttercup Jelly from Essie, blending from opaque to translucent, and adding intricate striation detailing. I also incorporated long wisps of ostrich feathers for maximum stage presence and movement during Chappell’s performances.”
In her conversation with Fallon, the singer disclosed something about herself that aligns perfectly with insights from our Coachella interview: if her music career hadn't taken off, she expressed interest in pursuing esthetics. We eagerly anticipate her full routine—here’s hoping for a Beauty Secrets feature in the future.
