América vs Cruz Azul: Outcome of the first leg final of the 2024 Clausura tournament in Liga MX

Antuna, who shared the top spot in the goal-scoring chart with two players during the regular season, has now reached nine goals in the current Clausura campaign.

"It's not ideal to go behind in a final if you can avoid it. We have to acknowledge the mental strength shown on the opponent's turf, coming from behind," stated Brazilian coach André Jardine. "It's not the first time this has happened to us in this playoff series. We regret that we had the clearer chances, but we're leaving without any advantage other than playing at home."

Differing from the quarter-final and semi-final rounds, the winner of the final must be determined on the field, whether it be within regular time, extra time, or penalties.

América aims to become only the fourth team to repeat as champions in Mexico since 1996, when two tournaments per year began. Previously, Pumas, León, and Atlas achieved this feat.

"Let's recognize the team's valor in securing the result. We let some opportunities slip, but earning a good draw is positive. Hopefully, we'll perform better at the Azteca," said Quiñones. "We need to rest well because Sunday brings a tough battle against a formidable opponent."

The Águilas aim to clinch their 15th title, solidifying their status as the most decorated team in the country, surpassing Chivas, who have 12 titles.
